Nha Trang Super-Speed Train Set for Test Run in 2012

Vietnam high speed railway will kick off in 2012 to meet the country's rising transportation and tourism growth, according to Vietnam senior cabinet official.  Prime Minister Dung Nguyen have told the Ministry of Transport , Planning and Investment, Vietnam Railway Corporation and other agencies to complete the project feasibility study.

Nguyen said the agencies should clarify the needs of the project to convince international investors to sponsor the super train after it is approved by the Vietnamese government.  Rail travel demand is forecast to increase to 48,000 – 50,000 passengers per day by 2020; Therefore, it requires high-speed railway development to move forward quick.

Currently, there are eighteen pairs of trains running on the Thong Nhat’s railway (Vietnam’s oldest) that extend the whole length of Vietnam with more than 5,000 passengers per day. Demand is growing rapidly, especially during peak season such as the summer, special events tourist month and during Tet New Year.
To put the super high-speed railway into operation by 2020, the design and construction must begin in 2012 according to experts. When the project is put into use, it will reduce the travel time between the two major cultural and economic hubs in Hanoi and Saigon. These 2 cities contribute over 90% of total national gross domestic product. The goal is to increase urbanisation, lighten the weight on big urban areas, protect the environment and ease road congestion in major cities.
However, the project has faced some difficulties such as lack of investment capital, modern technology and human resources. The 1st phrase of this operation is to place the the Hanoi rail and Nha Trang – Saigon section into use by 2020. Afterward the Vinh and Da Nang City section will be completed by 2030.  The entire project is expected to be completed in 2035, 25 years later.

It is estimated that once the new rail system is complete, the travel time from Hanoi to Nha Trang will take one hour and 24 minutes.  An additional one hour and 30 minutes from Nha Trang to Saigon.  Total time from North to South Vietnam will be less than 3 hours on the new super train.  Viet Nam Railway Corporation is the major stake holder in this investment with close to $55.8 million USD.
